The Coast Guard Commendation Medal may be awarded to a Coast Guard servicemember who distinguishes himself or herself by heroic or meritorious achievement or service that is worthy of special recognition but not sufficient enough in nature to warrant a higher decoration, such as a Bronze Star medal when in combat, or the Coast Guard Medal or Meritorious Service Medal when not in combat. To qualify, an act, achievement, or service must be performed well above the performance expected of the individual.
The Coast Guard Commendation Medal was established in 1943 as a commendation ribbon and designated as a medal in 1959.
Operational Distinguishing Device
The Coast Guard Commendation Medal may be accompanied with an Operational Distinguishing Device. An “O” is authorized for personal and unit awards. The award citation must specifically authorize the device. Individuals and units authorized to wear the “O” must have had direct participation in missions or extended periods of service of an operational, “hands-on” nature.Download a PDF Version of
