Women's History Month:
How It All Began
As recently as three decades ago,
the subject of women’s history
was a little-known and often unexplored part of American history. To help
raise awareness in both the public consciousness and in schools, the Education
Task Force of the Sonoma County (CA) Commission on the Status of Women
initiated a “Women’s History Week” celebration in 1978.
The Commission chose the week of March 8 in order to focus its observance
around International Women’s Day. Within a few years, a Congressional
Resolution declared “National Women’s History Week,” making
the annual celebration a national observance. These early women’s
history commemorations spurred more and more interest in uncovering women’s
forgotten heritage and legacies and, by 1987, both the House and the
Senate approved a Congressional Resolution to expand the celebration
to the entire month of March.
