How can I get a flag flown at the Women's Memorial?
Since the only flag allowed to be flown at Arlington National Cemetery is the flag at Arlington House, flags sent to the Women's Memorial are unfurled in the Memorial's Hall of Honor.
There are two options available to you in obtaining a flag to be unfurled at the Memorial. The first option is to purchase from us a 3' x 5' nylon flag for $39 ($29 flag, $10 administrative donation) plus $5.50 shipping and handling. The second option is for you to send us a flag you have purchased elsewhere. Note to Navy personnel, many Navy installations provide flags to their staff upon retirement, so you might want to check with your Career Counselor before purchasing a flag on your own. With this option, we ask for a donation to cover the administrative costs; most people send $10.
Once your flag is unfurled, we will return it to you with a personalized certificate, signed by Brigadier General Wilma Vaught, USAF, Ret., President of the Women's Memorial Foundation. Since General Vaught personally signs each certificate, we ask for at least a 3-week lead-time in case she is on travel. The information we need to complete the certificate is as follows: Rank/Rate; name as it should appear on the certificate; any designator (NC, SC, SW, AW, etc.); branch of service and if it is Reserve, TAR, etc.; the number of years of service; and, if significant, the date you would like the flag to be unfurled at the Memorial. Please do not send stamped or pre-paid self-addressed return envelopes for returning your flag; we are unable to use them because the envelopes do not protect the certificates from being creased or damaged.
We also ask that servicewomen for whom we unfurl flags be registered with the Memorial. If you would like to see if your honoree is registered, please contact our Registration Department at 800-222-2294 or by e-mail at regdept@womensmemorial.org. Servicewomen can be registered either online at www.womensmemorial.org under the "Membership" section or by calling our Registration Department at 800-222-2294 and requesting a registration form. We ask for a donation of $25 when a servicewoman is being registered.
Please forward the flag, flag donation information on the honoree, including a copy of their registration form if applicable, name of a point of contact and their commercial phone number, an email address, and a complete address for sending the flag and certificate. Information should be forwarded to: Women's Memorial Foundation, 200 N. Glebe Rd., Suite 400; Arlington, VA 22203. If you have any questions, please contact the Public Relations Department at pr@womensmemorial.org or by calling 703-533-1155 or 800-222-2294.
