Nurses
were assigned to military hospitals in Florida, Minnesota,
Texas, New York, California, Hawaii, Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Philippines
and other areas. A few Army nurses served at the Naval Hospital in Norfolk,
VA. Women also nursed on board the Army's transports and hospital
ships.
One nurse recalled sitting calmly on the deck of a hospital ship, sewing on buttons as a battle raged around her. Esther Hasson who later became the Chief of the Navy Nurse Corps served aboard the Relief. She described the hospital ship's operating room:
