Barton, under the auspices of the Red Cross, chartered the ship State
of Texas. She loaded it with civil relief supplies and sailed to Cuba
in June 1898, accompanied by four Red Cross nurses. Anchoring shortly
after the American Army received heavy casualties, they went ashore to
nurse the wounded.
