Rose M. Heavren of New Haven, CT, signed this contract on Aug. 1, 1899, at Santiago de Cuba. She promised to perform the duties of chief nurse at the US General Hospital in Santiago de Cuba at a salary of $60 per month, with one ration of food per day and “medical attention.” The Army also agreed to provide Ms. Heavren with transportation to and from Cuba, providing that her contract was not annulled for misconduct or neglect of duty. The contract was to continue until terminated by the Surgeon General or the Chief Surgeon of a military department or Army in the field.
