The unit or units that 2LT Madalyn Mays Roths of the Signal Corps served in during WWII. In May 1943, Madalyn went to OCS and was cleared for cryptographical duty by the ASF Eastern Signal Corps School, Ft Monmouth, NJ. She was then assigned to the WAC Training Center, where she did company work and was the assistant to the Provost Marshal. In 1944, after training with the Signal Corps, she was sent to Algiers; Casserta, Italy; and Dijon, France, where she became the message center officer for the southern line of communications. Some time later, Madalyn became a message center officer in Marseilles, France. She returned to the US in Nov 1945 and separated from the Army at Ft Dix, NJ, on January 8, 1946. Anyone who remembers Delores Maxine and Shirley Kay McAllister, the two sisters who enlisted in the WAVES on July 27, 1956, and then attended boot camp at Bainbridge, MD. Delores went to radioman school in San Diego and was then transferred to the federal building for the 12th Naval District in San Francisco, CA. Shirley went to Astoria, OR, as a storekeeper at Tongue Point Naval Base and while there, was selected as a poster girl for the Navy to publicize the WAVES and was on the honor guard. After 2 years, the sisters were both assigned to Treasure Island Naval Station, CA. While there, Delores worked in the radio room at 12th Naval District Headquarters and later in the secret department as a cryptography operator and Shirley worked in the ship's service store in the Accounting Department. Jean was born in Chicago in 1910 and died in VT in 1994. She received her MD from Columbia University in 1940, took training in Internal Medicine at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston in 1943 and in the late 1940s, she underwent training to become a board-certified anesthesiologist. In 1948, she went to Germany and taught modern anesthesiology in several German medical schools, initially as a private person and later under the auspices of the State Department. In 1949, she wrote and published the first complete textbook on anesthesiology ever written in the German language. This information is for a paper I’m presenting on Dr. Henley's life and contributions at the 5th International Symposium on the History of Anesthesia in Spain.
