Timelines and Statistics
Highlights in the History of Military Women is a timeline detailing the distinguished history of America’s military women from the American Revolution to 2002.

Breakthroughs for Black Military Women traces the path of African-American servicewomen to full military participation in timeline format.

Statistics on Women in the Military provides numbers of women serving on Active Duty and in the Reserve and Guard as well as historical statistical information including women prisoners of war and women in military conflicts.

Articles
Trowell-Harris Named Leader for 21st Century highlights the life of the Air National Guard’s first black woman general officer. Dr. Irene Trowell-Harris, a retired USAF NC major general and current Director of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Center for Women Veterans, who was named one of the “21 Leaders for the 21st Century” by Women’s eNews.

Challenging the System: Two Army Women Fight for Equality discusses the struggle of a Women's Army Corps (WAC) private and her lawyer, a former WAC officer, whose 1952 challenge of a segregation law led the Interstate Commerce Commission to reverse the "separate but equal" policy which had been followed since 1887.

Brief History of Black Women in the Military reveals the largely unrecognized and unrewarded contributions of African-American servicewomen from the early patriots to the women of today's modern military.

Oral Histories
Staff Sergeant Ernestine (Johnson) Thomas enlisted in the US Air Force in 1949 when the armed services were still struggling with how to carry out these mandates for gender and racial integration. Her oral history highlight is available online and a full transcript is on file at the Women’s Memorial Foundation.

RM3 Jessie Ada Richardson served in the Navy Women's Reserve (WAVES) from December 1944-May 1946. View a brief excerpt of her 2005 oral history interview online. Full transcript is on file at Women’s Memorial Foundation.
