Women's Memorial Hosts Guest Artist-in-Residence, Chris Demarest
Painting by Chris DemarestThe Women's Memorial Foundation is delighted to welcome our first guest artist-in-residence, Chris Demarest. Mr. Demarest is an author and illustrator of over one hundred titles as well as an official artist for the Coast Guard. He has documented USCG operations from the Persian Gulf to Hurricane Katrina. Many of his drawings and paintings are in the USCG permanent art collection in Washington, DC.
For the next several months, Chris will be setting up his paints and easel in the Memorial where he'll be painting and hanging portraits honoring the "greatest generation"—the men and women of World War II.
Artist Chris Demarest talks with Memorial visitors. Photo by Chris DemarestWorking with our Curator of Collections, Britta Granrud, Chris has selected from the collection a number of images of World War II women on the job, which will be the focus of that part of the exhibit that will relate to women. At completion, the exhibit will include some 40-50 images of the men and women of World War II.
We hope you will make plans to visit the Memorial during Chris' tenure with us, which is expected to be until early 2012. We are so very pleased and proud to have Chris help us launch this new chapter of Women's Memorial activities. To see some of his extraordinary work, visit Chris' website.
