New Book Offers a Compelling Look at "America's Forgotten War"

The newest book released by the Memorial, "'A Defense Weapon Known to Be of Value:' Servicewomen of the Korean War Era," is filled with historical facts and compelling stories by America’s servicewomen, including discussion of the much debated issue of women and weapons training. “Overseas weapons training was taken more seriously particularly in places closer to the front lines such as Tokyo where USA PVT Muriel (Scharrer) Wimmer of Brooklyn, NY, worked as a medical technician. Although the women could absent themselves from the rifle range if they chose, no one did,” according to the book. This 320-page volume records the actions of women who served in the US Armed Forces, as well as those in the Red Cross, the USO, and other non-governmental organizations that sent women overseas in support of US military personnel.
