Health Care for Formerly Ineligible Veterans

If you have been categorized as a Priority 8 applicant in the VA health care system, you may now be eligible to enroll for care.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced on Jan. 15, 2009, plans to re-open enrollment in its health care system to about 265,000 veterans who have been deemed Priority 8 applicants.

Priority 8 applicants are those whose incomes exceed the current VA means test and geographic means test income thresholds by 10 percent or less. VA originally suspended enrollment for Priority 8 veterans because it was unable to provide all enrolled veterans with timely access to its health care due to a tremendous growth in the number of veterans seeking enrollment at that time. VA now plans to re-open enrollment for a portion of these veterans by July 2009 without compromising the Department's ability to provide high quality health care services to all enrolled veterans who are eligible for care.
