Frequently Asked Questions

(Updated 02/26/10)

Who qualifies as a WASP?
Those who graduated from WASP training and received their WASP wings, the 28 Women’s Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron pilots (called “The Originals”) who were awarded WASP wings, and the 11 WASP trainees who lost their lives during training. Invitations to events will be to WASP and one escort, or to one family member representing a deceased WASP. Additional tickets for ancillary events may be available for purchase. Details will be posted on this Web site as they are finalized.

Who do I contact if I am a WASP or a family member of a deceased WASP?

If you are a WASP, or the designated family member of a deceased WASP, please contact Katie Bateman at wasp@womensmemorial.org at the Women’s Memorial Foundation to ensure you are on the list to receive an invitation. Please designate one family member of a deceased WASP to receive the ceremony invitation and to RSVP with the names of additional family members who may want to come based on space availability.

What are the dates of the WASP Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony and other events?

The WASP Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony will take place on Wednesday, Mar. 10, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at the U.S. Capitol. Other celebration events include a Remembrance Ceremony at the World War II Memorial and a Welcome Salute Reception with senior Defense Department officials at the Women In Military Service For America Memorial. These events will be held the afternoon of March 9. You must print, complete and return the Reservation Form by Feb. 26, 2010. It is only necessary to complete and forward one (1) Reservation Form per WASP family group. Details about the events can be found in the Celebration Activities Information Paper.

How will I get to the events?
Free bus transportation for the WASP is available from the Gaylord National Hotel to all events and return. All others must purchase a $20 bus pass that will cover all bus transportation from the Gaylord National Hotel to celebration events and return. RSVP is required for all passengers. See the Reservation Form for RSVP and purchase.

How can I get tickets to the ceremony?

We have been informed that the Speaker’s office is no longer issuing invitations or accepting RSVPs for the ceremony.

The RSVP line is closed. How do WASPs get tickets or RSVP for the ceremony?
If you are a WASP and have been told when you contact the Speaker’s office that you cannot RSVP, please contact the Women’s Memorial Foundation at 800-222-2294/703-533-1155 or wasp@womensmemorial.org. The Foundation has been authorized to take the reservation for the WASP and her guest and forward it for inclusion on the list of attendees.

Can WASP Family Representatives get tickets or RSVP for the ceremony?
We have been informed that the Speaker’s office is no longer issuing invitations or accepting RSVPs for the ceremony. We are sorry to inform that this includes the family representatives of those WASP who are deceased or unable to attend. The only exception is the WASP and her guest. If you have been informed, either by recording or e-mail, when you contacted the Speaker’s office, that RSVPs are no long being accepted, your name will not be included on the list of attendees and you will not be able to attend.

How do I know if I am not on the guest list?
If you have been informed, either by recording or e-mail, when you contacted the Speaker’s office, that RSVPs are no longer being accepted, your name will not be included on the list of attendees and you will not be able to attend. At this time, we are not aware of a point of contact where individuals may check to confirm if they are included on the guest list.

Will the event be moved to a bigger venue so that more may attend?
Because of the overwhelming response to the Speaker’s invitation for the WASP Congressional Gold Medal ceremony, the event has been moved to Emancipation Hall in the US Capitol Visitor Center, which is a larger venue. It now is filled to capacity and the Speaker’s office is no longer issuing invitations or accepting RSVPs for the ceremony.

When will I receive my Congressional Gold Medal replica?

Details regarding the distribution of the Congressional Gold Medal replica and how it will be presented are still being worked by the office of the Speaker of the House. We will provide that information as soon as it is available.

Who will pay for my travel to Washington, DC?
The cost of travel is the responsibility of the individual.

What should I wear?
Recommended dress for all events is business attire or the equivalent military uniform. We’ve been asked on several occasions if it would be appropriate for family members or friends to wear a WASP uniform in honor of the WASP. It would be inappropriate for non-WASP to wear the uniform, just as it would be inappropriate for a person who had not served to wear a military uniform.

How do I get press credentials to cover the WASP Congressional Gold Medal ceremony and other events?
Media interested in covering the Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony should contact the appropriate House media gallery: http://www.house.gov/house/mediagallery.shtml. Media interested in interviewing WASP, their families, Brig. Gen. Vaught or covering the other events should contact Sara Neumann at 202-414-0788 or sneumann@susandavis.com.
