World War II Military Nurses Book Talks
American Nightingale: The Story of Frances Slanger, Forgotten Heroine of Normandy
and
And If I Perish: Frontline U.S. Army Nurses in World War II

On May 28, the Women In Military Service For America Memorial is hosting two book talks about the military nurses of World War II. Both books are exceptional portrayals of military nurses and must-read primers for the upcoming WWII Memorial dedication festivities:

Join author Bob Welch at 10 AM, May 28, for an amazing and poignant discussion of his new book, American Nightingale: The Story of Frances Slanger, Forgotten Heroine of Normandy. Among the first women on Utah Beach on June 10, 1944, was 2nd Lieutenant Frances Slanger, a young, fresh-faced nurse from Roxbury, Massachusetts. Killed by enemy fire near Elsenborn, Belgium, just a few months later, Lt. Slanger became the first American nurse to die in the European Theater of Operation. Learn more about her story and how she touched the souls of thousands of soldiers before her death and left a legacy of humility and patriotism that resonates still today.

At 2:30 PM, 28 May, authors Evelyn Monahan and Rosemary Neidel-Greenlee return to the Women's Memorial for a discussion and booksigning about their latest book And If I Perish: Frontline U.S. Army Nurses in World War II. Nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and a holder of five Amazon stars, this extraordinary story of battlefield nursing is a powerful account of Army nurses in WWII's European Theater of Operation. Characterized as a "marvelous portrayal of nursing at its best," the book was written from the diaries, letters, oral histories and firsthand accounts of the women themselves.

The Women’s Memorial, located at the gateway to Arlington National Cemetery, is readily accessible by Metro (Blue Line) and paid parking is available. Those interested in attending are encouraged to reserve a seat by calling 703-533-1155 or 800-222-2294.
