And If I Perish: Frontline U.S. Army Nurses in World War II

A discussion and book signing with author Rosemary Neidel-Greenlee of And If I Perish: Frontline U.S. Army Nurses in World War II kicks off a series of Women's History Month events at the Women In Military Service For America Memorial on March 9 at 12 noon. Nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and holder of five Amazon stars, this extraordinary story of battlefield nursing is a powerful account of Army nurses in WWII's European Theater of Operation. Characterized as a 'marvelous portrayal of nursing at its best,' the book was written from the diaries, letters, oral histories and firsthand accounts of the women themselves and is a must-read primer for the upcoming WWII Memorial dedication festivities.

Rosemary Neidel-Greenlee and her co-author Evelyn M. Monahan are no strangers to military nursing and the nurses who served during WWII. Together, they wrote All This Hell: U.S. Nurses Imprisoned by the Japanese. They also joined WWII flight nurse Agnes Jensen Mangerich in writing Albanian Escape: The True Story of U.S. Army Nurses Behind Enemy Lines. Monahan, now a retired psychologist, was an Army medic and Neidel-Greenlee is a former Navy nurse. Both served for many years with the Department of Veterans Affairs in the Atlanta area.

The event is the first in a series of "brown bag" lunch programs hosted by the Women's Memorial Foundation in celebration of Women's History Month. Those interested in attending are encouraged to reserve a seat by calling 703-533-1155 or 800-222-2294. Guests should bring a brown bag lunch and a friend.

The Women’s Memorial, located at the gateway to Arlington National Cemetery, is readily accessible by Metro (Blue Line) and paid parking is available.
