The ceremony, one of the major Memorial Day programs in the nation’s capital, is free and open to the public and includes formal military honors, a keynote address and personal tributes to departed comrades. Members of the public are invited to join in the personal tribute segment of the program. The program will also include a special salute to the Navy Nurse Corps, which celebrated its 100th anniversary on May 13.

Also open at the Memorial in time for Memorial Day commemorative activities is The American Soldier: A Photographic Tribute to Soldiers and Marines from the Civil War to the War in Iraq. On the fourth stop of a nationwide tour, this special exhibit features 116 photographs—taken by combat photojournalists and Pulitzer Prize winning photographers—that capture the courage, camaraderie, heroism and ultimate sacrifice of US soldiers and Marines from the Civil War to today’s wars. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
