Women's Memorial Observes Veterans Day

The annual Women’s Memorial Veterans Day ceremony will begin at 3:00 p.m., Nov. 11, 2011. The ceremony, one of three major observances in the nation’s capital, is free and open to the public and will include formal military honors, a keynote address, veterans’ remarks, and a wreath laying.
Delivering this year’s keynote address is the Honorable Allison A. Hickey, the VA’s Under Secretary for Benefits. Appointed to the position in June 2011, she directs the administration of VA’s disability compensation, pension, education, home loan guaranty, vocational rehabilitation and employment, and life insurance programs, and an annual budget of more than $72.3 billion. Secretary Hickey is a 27-year Veteran of the Air Force, having served on Active Duty, the Air National Guard and the Air Force Reserve. She is a 1980 graduate of the US Air Force Academy, the first class to include women.

The Women In Military Service For America Memorial is the nation’s only major memorial honoring all servicewomen, past, and present. Featuring an exhibit gallery, theatre, Register of women who have served and a gift shop, the Memorial is open to the public, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., daily.
