Remembering 160 of America's Heroes

A year ago on Oct. 18, 2014, injured and exhausted Navy Reserve CAPT Nancy Lacore stepped onto the Women In Military Service For America Memorial Plaza after running 160 miles in honor of the 160 servicewomen who had lost their lives in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Joining her that day for the final leg were 160 runners, each wearing a Tribute Ribbon bearing the picture and name of one of the fallen women. It was a moving event and a visible reminder that combat knows no gender. Lacore has since turned her effort into a nonprofit named Valor Run that sponsors running events around the country to honor those 160 servicewomen so their sacrifice will never be forgotten.
To mark the first anniversary of the 160-mile run, Valor Run has joined with the Women’s Memorial Foundation to present a Virtual VALOR RUN 10 Miler/5K Anniversary Run. The Virtual Run-another opportunity to honor and remember these heroes-is scheduled for 10 a.m. (EDT)/7 a.m. (PDT), October 17. A nationwide tribute run, participants choose their own route, organize a group run or join a group set up by volunteer ambassadors. Details, including registration closing dates and ambassador locations, are on the Valor Run website. The online closing date for registration is October 10. The $45 registration fee includes a printable bib, T-shirt and finisher medal or participants can choose the no T-shirt, no medal option at $25. Proceeds above operating costs will be split between Valor Run and the Women’s Memorial Foundation.
Thanks to the support of many of you, Nancy Lacore’s 2014 Valor Run raised some $33,000 in honor of those 160 servicewomen who gave their lives in service to the nation in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The Women’s Memorial Foundation and Wounded Wear were the beneficiaries of her extraordinary effort. This time, we ask you to put on your running shoes, encourage your family and friends to do the same and join runners across the nation in paying tribute to America’s fallen servicewomen. This is our chance to unite in honor of the fallen 160 in a visible way. We hope you will support the Virtual Valor Run.
